NM Section News January 2013

January 8, 2013

Attention Albuquerque area EmComm operators:  Jim Hunter, NM5JH, is the RACES Officer for the City of Albuquerque and is looking for operators to staff the City EOC when activated.  Duties at the EOC require passing FEMA independent study courses IS-100, 200, 700 & 800.  For more info see Jim’s note on the Mid Rio Grande club web site, http://nm5mr.com/ under Races EOC for the city of Albuquerque.

D-Star activity continues to expand in New Mexico with the activation of the Upper Rio’s new machine K5URR on 146.86, located at “The Hub” near the Truman gate on Kirtland AFB.  This frequency has been used for a number of years for auto-patch only in the served area and should be much better utilized as a D-Star repeater.  Santa Fe Amateur Radio Club will soon be activating their VHF module on 145.21 MHz operating from the same location as their existing UHF module.  They are currently looking for some new hardware (duplexers, etc) to complete their installation.

Kids Day activities were conducted at several locations in New Mexico this past weekend.  High Desert ARC reported the following:  Kids’ Day was a great success with many contacts made, Morse code learned, and tape-measure antennas built.  There was also lots of food to keep everyone energized.
HDARC extends a grateful “Thank You” to Phil and Sue Darling for hosting and sharing their school in Corrales.

Hero’s Club by Don Wood, W5FHA, past Section Manager

The “Hero’s club” is a listing of those generous hams who have contributed equipment for our efforts to get radio clubs into the schools and encourage the students to become active hams. The school sponsor does not have to be a ham.  Available equipment is currently being inventoried and tested.  Contact Don Wood, W5FHA (w5fha@arrl.net) for a list of the available equipment or to make your donation.
